| Allis-Chalmers Tractors. The first Allis-Chalmers tractors were produced in 1914. The range produced in the early days were expensive and while they were well engineered they offered no advantage over products produced by other manufactures. In 1929 Allis-Chalmers joined the United Tractor and Equipment Corporation to produce the United tractor as part of a wide range of farm machinery. The Corporation soon failed but from this came the revered Allis U. In the early years the Model U was equipped with a Continental L-head side valve engine. From 1933 onwards Allis-Chalmers produced their own 34 hp overhead valve four cylinder UM engine for the Model U. Both the Model U and the Model B were by far the most popular Allis-Chalmers products imported into the United Kingdom, both played valuable parts in the campaign to produce home grown food during the Second World War. The Model B was introduced in 1937 and over the following 20 years over 125,000 were sold. For many years it was considered to be one of the best tractors in the 20 hp class. The last Allis-Chalmers tractor commonly seen in the United Kingdom was the D and ED series produced from 1957 until the 1960's. During the 1980's Allis-Chalmers like many other makers became the victim of rapidly changing financial times. The farm equipment division was sold to K-H-Deutz AG of Germany in 1985.
